The Babel Initiative is a recognized academic research association at Sciences Po Paris' Menton Campus. Led by undergraduate students, Babel promotes intercultural dialogue across the Mediterranean, Middle East, and North Africa, through the publication of student-led research. Over the past year, we have focused on Türkiye, conducting preliminary research and fieldwork.
Over the course of this year, our researchers have engaged in meetings with numerous stakeholders in Türkiye, including government agencies, consulates, NGOs, private enterprises, institutions, and individuals. They have also been working closely with academic mentors, who are each specialized researchers on Türkiye. The Colloquium will highlight the work of our researchers on the following topics:
Digitalising the Divine: the digitalisation of Turkish coffee fortune-telling and the transformation of ritual and community in digital spaces.
From Cup to Civilization: Turkish coffeehouses as social spaces and their role in cultural life and national identity.
L’Héritage Vivant: cultural resilience and identity preservation among minority communities in Turkey focusing on the Rum community.
Water Stress: rural and urban perceptions of environmental and social impacts of large-scale water infrastructure projects in Southeastern Turkey.
Archaeology: heritage preservation, tourism, and political narratives in Turkey.
